EMMA AND ADOLPH WENDEL
Emma Marie {Mary} Engbrock was born on September 17,1867, to William {Jacob Engbrock} and Barbara {Braden} Engbrock in a farming community near Ellinger, Fayette County, Texas. She was baptized on October 6, 1867, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Hostyn Hill in Ellinger with Andreas Braden and Johanna Engbrock Reinhart chosen as her sponsors.
Emma {Marie Mary Engbrock} and Adolph {Adolphus} Wendel were united in marriage on October 21, 1886, at St. Roch's Catholic Church in Mentz, Texas. The ceremony was performed by Rev. T. Weimer with Robert Engbrock and Adam Wendel serving as witnesses.
Adolph {Adolphus Wendel} was born on June 8, 1863, to Peter Jacob {Petrus (Peter) Jacobus (Jacob) Wendel} and Barbara {Barbera} Braden Wendel who resided in the Mentz community. He was baptized on June 14, 1863, at St. Roch's Catholic Church in Mentz by Rev. Peter Tarrillion with Peter Jacob's brother Adolph and his sister Rosina chosen to be sponsors for the occasion.
After their marriage they resided in Mentz where Adolph was engaged in farming. It was here that their children: William Peter, Peter Jacob, Andrew Joseph, Hedwig Cecelia, Leo Joseph, and twins, Alvin Joseph and Regina Marie, were born. In 1900, Emma and Adolph moved to Wharton County where Adolph was engaged in farming and raising cattle. They had three more children born in Wharton County: Erban, Katherine Bertha, and Elizabeth Frances.
Will {William Peter Wendel} married Lena Lutringer, daughter of Jacob {Lutringer} and Mary Burger Lutringer {in 1911}. Will and Lena had four children: Adolph, Marie, Isabel, and Genevieve. Will was engaged in farming and resided on his farm until his death in 1954 at age 67. Lena passed away in 1985. Will and Lena are buried in St. John's Cemetery in Taiton, Texas.
Pete {Peter Jacob Wendel} married {Otillie Lenora} Tillie Gadeke, daughter of August {Gadeke} and Alouise Geonig Gadeke, {on November 7, 1911}. Pete was engaged in agriculture until 1923 at which time he established a produce company in El Campo. He also developed a market for beer and wine. Pete and Tillie had six children born during their marriage: Lenora, Margaret, Rosalee, Clarence, Henrietta, and Delores. Tillie died in 1949 and Pete resided in El Campo until his death in 1972 at age 83. Pete and Tillie are buried in Garden of Memories Cemetery in El Campo, Texas.
Andrew {Joseph Wendel} married Viola {Wilhelmena (Wilhemine)} Frels, daughter of William {Frels} and Annie Weigel Frels {on November 22, 1916}. Andrew and Viola resided in Karnes County where Arleene and Alvah James (A.J.) were born. Andrew and his family moved to El Campo in 1926 where he built a modern cotton gin. He bought real estate and farmed, later his interest spread to the hardware business and road construction. Andrew died in 1953 in El Campo at age 60. Viola continued to reside in their family home until her death in 1957. Andrew and Viola are buried in Holy Cross Cemetery in El Campo, Texas.
Hattie {Hedwig Cecelia Wendel} married Joseph Zimmermann and after their marriage they resided in Seguin where Joseph was a butcher. They were the parents of Joseph Jr. and Helen. Joe died in Seguin in 1949. Hattie continued to reside in Seguin thence moving to Houston where she died in 1983 at age 88. Hattie and Joe are buried at St. James Cemetery in Seguin, Texas.
Leo {Joseph Wendel} married Rosa Vetter, daughter of John {Vetter} and Frieda Conrad Vetter. After their marriage they resided in Seguin, Texas, where Leona and Cleburne were born. Leo and his family moved to El Campo after living in Seguin several years. They eventually resided in the same home where William {Jacob Engbrock} and Barbara {Braden} Engbrock had lived prior to their deaths. Leo operated a taxi service in El Campo for many years. Leo died in El Campo in 1963 at age 67. Rosa resided in her home for many years and later taking up residence with her daughter in Port Lavaca. She died in 1992 in a nursing home in Texas City, Texas. Leo and Rosa are buried at Holy Cross Cemetery in El Campo.
Alvin {Joseph Wendel} married Clementine {Clemmie} Fellmann, daughter of Theobald {Fellmann} and Louisa Luthringer Fellmann. Alvin and Clemmie resided on their farm in the Taiton area where Alvin was engaged in farming. Upon Alvin's retirement, he and Clemmie moved to El Campo where they lived until his death in 1968 at age 70. Clementine resided in their home and later moved to Garden Villa Nursing Home where she passed away in 1993. Alvin and Clemmie are buried at St. John's Cemetery in Taiton.
Regina {Marie Wendel} married Florian Petschka, son of Joseph {Petschka} and Theresa Butta Petschka. Florian and Regina resided on their farm in the Taiton community where Florian was engaged in farming. They were the parents of three children: Raymond, Lorraine, and Gloria. After Florian's death in 1967, Regina continued to reside on the farm for many years later moving to Houston where she died in 1992. Florian and Regina are buried at St. John's Cemetery.
Erban {Wendel} married Madeline Nitsch and resided on their farm northwest of El Campo where Erban was engaged in farming. They adopted their only child Eugene when he was a baby. Madeline was involved an auto accident in 1963 and died as a result of her injuries. Erban resided on the farm until his death in 1965 at age 63. Erban and Madeline are buried at St. John's Cemetery.
Katherine {(Katy) Bertha} married John Nohavitza, son of Joseph {Nohavitza} and Amilia Ambrose Nohavitza. John and Katy resided in the Jones Creek Community near Taiton, Texas, where John was engaged in farming. They had seven children during their marriage: Ruth, John Jr., Dorothy, Jarrell, Rita Jean, Donald, and Kathryn Ann. Katherine died in 1981 at age 77 and John died the following year. Katy and John are buried in St. John's Cemetery.
Elizabeth {Frances Wendel} married Charles Drapela and resided in Houston where Charles was employed by the United States Postal Service. They were the parents of four children: Charles, Doris Ann, David, and Mary Elizabeth. Elizabeth and Charles were divorced and later Elizabeth married Ernest Holden. Elizabeth died in Austin, Texas, in 1984 at age 79. Elizabeth is buried at St. John's Cemetery.
Emma {Marie Mary Engbrock} and Adolph {Adolphus Wendel} moved to El Campo in 1928 after Adolph retired from farming. They built their new home near St. Philip's Catholic Church, which they attended. Adolph passed away on December 23, 1936, at age 73, shortly after he and Emma had celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. Emma maintained her home until her death due to a heart attack on May 20, 1942, at the age of 74. Emma and Adolph are buried in St. John's Cemetery in Taiton, Texas.
